چکیده

In many practical classiication problems it is important to distinguish false positive from false negative results when evaluating the performance of the classiier. This is of particular importance for medical diagnostic tests. In this context, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves have become a standard tool. Here we apply this concept to characterize the performance of a simple neural network. Investigating the binary classiication of a perceptron we calculate analytically the shape of the corresponding ROC curves. The innuence of the size of the training set and the prevalence of the quality considered are studied by means of a statistical-mechanics analysis.

Sample Size Determination Using Roc Analysis

The paper presents a new method of sample size determination (SSD) based on performance evaluation of systems under study. The method builds upon previous work on Bayesian approach to nonparametric receiver operating characteristics (ROC) analysis with estimation of probability density functions and confidence intervals for parameters of ROC curve. Technical details of the method together with ...

Enhanced perceptrons using contrastive biclusters

Perceptrons are neuronal devices capable of fully discriminating linearly separable classes. Although straightforward to implement and train, their applicability is usually hindered by non-trivial requirements imposed by real-world classification problems. Therefore, several approaches, such as kernel perceptrons, have been conceived to counteract such difficulties. In this paper, we investigat...

Optimized multilayer perceptrons for molecular classification and diagnosis using genomic data

MOTIVATION Multilayer perceptrons (MLP) represent one of the widely used and effective machine learning methods currently applied to diagnostic classification based on high-dimensional genomic data. Since the dimensionalities of the existing genomic data often exceed the available sample sizes by orders of magnitude, the MLP performance may degrade owing to the curse of dimensionality and over-...

Using Chebyshev’s Inequality to Determine Sample Size in Biometric Evaluation of Fingerprint Data

The fingerprint datasets in some cases may exceed a million of samples. The underlying distribution functions of the similarity scores are unknown. Therefore, the needed size of a biometric evaluation test set is an important question in terms of both efficiency and accuracy. In this article, Chebyshev’s inequality, in combination with simple random sampling, is used to determine the sample siz...
